1930s Great Depression

Dictators, Democracy, and American Public Culture

Dictators, Democracy, and American Public Culture
Focusing on portrayals of Mussolini's Italy, Hitler's Germany, 1930s great depression and Stalin's Russia in U.S. films, magazine 1930s great depression and newspaper articles, books, plays, speeches, 1930s great depression and other texts, Benjamin Alpers traces changing American understandings of dictatorship from the late 1920s through the early years of the Cold War. During the early 1930s, most Americans' conception of dictatorship focused on the dictator. Whether viewed as heroic or horrific, the dictator was represented as a figure of great, masculine power 1930s great depression and effectiveness. As the Great Depression gripped the United States, a few people--including conservative members of the press 1930s great depression and some Hollywood filmmakers--even dared to suggest that dictatorship might be the answer to America's social problems. In the late 1930s, American explanations of dictatorship shifted focus from individual leaders to the movements that empowered them. Totalitarianism became the image against which a view of democracy emphasizing tolerance 1930s great depression and pluralism 1930s great depression and disparaging mass movements developed. First used to describe dictatorships of both right 1930s great depression and left, the term totalitarianism fell out of use upon the U.S. entry into World War II. With the war's end 1930s great depression and the collapse of the U.S.-Soviet alliance, however, concerns about totalitarianism lay the foundation for the emerging Cold War. Paper Moon (DVD)

Paper Moon (DVD)
The romantic films of the 1930s and'40s influenced director Peter Bogdanovich (THE LAST PICTURE SHOW, MASK) in PAPER MOON, a masterpiece influenced by the filmmaking of those periods --a classic comedy drama that resembles the films of John Ford or Sam Wood. Moses Pray (Ryan O'Neal) is a happy-go-lucky con man traveling throughout the Midwest during the Great Depression, conning widows into buying Bibles. Stopping in a small town for a friend's funeral, he is persuaded to deliver the deceased's precocious 10-year-old daughter, Addie Loggins (Tatum O'Neal, Ryan's real-life daughter), to her aunt's home. The resemblance between Moses 1930s great depression and Addie--who never knew her father--is uncanny, 1930s great depression and the two are soon acting like father 1930s great depression and daughter as they travel the back roads of heartland America. Despite his initial misgivings, Moses is delighted to find that Addie is a boon to business, catching on quickly 1930s great depression and adding her own twists to his favorite cons. Madeline Kahn stars as Trixie Delight, a ladyfriend Moses meets along the way--a situation that brings out Addie's possessive side. Bogdanovich convincingly recreates the feel 1930s great depression and look of the 1930s with his nostalgic look at life on the open road. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay; both Kahn 1930s great depression and the 11-year-old O'Neal were nominated for Best Supporting Actress, which O'Neal won.
